Oh come on people, the book wasn't that bad. I mean I ranked it "C" thru page 120 and then changed it to a B by the end. It is overflowing with literary components and has more symbolism than Jake's temple (just to clarify, that wasn't anti-semetic, it was props to the Jewish population for being incredibly genius). Yes, okay, after reading Obasan each night it felt like someone had continuously been flicking me in the stomach with a pencil and at times I wondered if Joy Kogawa (the author) suffered from major depression. But just because it goes into oodles of detail on how bad the Japanese in Canada had it, and rips the U.S. indirectly for the A-bombs, doesn't mean that it wasn't interesting or meaningful. Plus it totally disses Canada thereby making the book offically "American" (Stephen Colbert). Just because it doesn't involve fluffy loveable cuddly furballs doesnt mean its crap. At the very least, if you disliked the book overall, think of reasons why you feel that way to make good discussions. Get ready for a couple weeks of a depressed 2nd period!
